Trump just BEGGED the Supreme Court to save his $400 million White House ballroom — after a federal appeals court ruled he has no power to build it without Congress.
Trump’s emergency filing claims the ballroom is somehow already 65% complete, with 250 workers laboring 20 hours a day, seven days a week. He says the structure is now five stories deep and 70 feet high.
The D.C. Circuit ruled 2-1 on August 7 that the 90,000-square-foot ballroom cannot go up without congressional authorization.
“Each President is a temporary tenant, not the owner, of the White House and its Executive Residence,” the panel wrote, adding that Congress “has not ceded unfettered authority to the Executive Branch to dramatically redesign, reshape, and reconstruct the White House.”
That order does not take effect until August 21. Until then, the aboveground work continues, and Trump asked the justices to act immediately. The application goes to Chief Justice John Roberts.
Trump described the project to the court as an “integrated military complex” that is “vitally required by national security,” and warned that “forcing the President to come hat-in-hand to Congress so the People’s House is safe gives the Legislature dangerous leverage.”
The filing also goes after the woman whose sworn statement anchors the lawsuit.
Alison Hoagland, a Washington preservationist on the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s board, said she walks near the White House regularly and would suffer “professional and personal injuries, including to my aesthetic, cultural and historical interests” if the ballroom is built. Trump’s Soliciter General told the justices the “subjective displeasure of an offended observer does not amount to concrete injury.”
Trump claims no taxpayer money is involved and that $400 million in private donations is paying for it. The administration asked Congress for $1 billion for the project, and Congress refused in May. In June, Democrats warned that $350 million from a tax cuts law appeared to have been redirected to it.
